Sharon Johnston Park

If you're craving a little fresh air and a little throwback, Sharon Johnston Park might just be your new favorite spot.

Tucked away in New Market, this Madison County park gave us major old Kids Kingdom energy — you know, the kind that takes you right back to childhood? It's low-key, peaceful, and packed with charm.

Here’s what we loved:

🛝 Playgrounds galore
There are multiple play structures, perfect for younger and older kids alike. The equipment may not be shiny and new, but that's part of the charm. It has that slightly weathered, well-loved vibe that makes kids feel right at home to run wild and get creative.

🚻 Bathrooms on site
Major win.

🍉 Picnic-friendly spaces
We packed sandwiches and snacks and grabbed one of the many picnic tables sprinkled throughout the park. There are also covered pavilions if you’re planning something more official — or just want to enjoy lunch with a view.

🌊 Pondside peace & a small waterfall
One of the highlights was the walk around the pond. It’s an easy, scenic stroll (perfect for strollers or little feet), with swings that let you rock and relax while looking out over the water. There’s even a small waterfall that adds a little magic to the walk.

🦆 Wildlife watching & wide open spaces
From ducks to dragonflies, there’s plenty to see — and lots of grassy space to run and play.

Pro Tips:

  • The swings by the lake are a must. Take your coffee, take a moment.

  • Great spot for a casual playdate or even a birthday picnic.

This park may not be as buzzy as some of the newer spots, but that's what makes it so special. If you’re local to North Alabama and haven’t visited yet — add it to your summer bucket list.
